In a major move towards digitally transforming the city, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to offer free Wi-Fi connectivity across Islamabad, beginning with 30 key locations.

During a high-level meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the initiative aims to make Islamabad a digitally connected “Free Wi-Fi City."

In this regard, CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa briefed that initially, free Wi-Fi facilities will be provided at “30 different locations in Islamabad for the convenience of citizens.”

Notably, these 30 locations include main Markazs, Metro and Electric Feeder Bus stations, parks and other high-traffic areas to ensure maximum citizens benefit from the free Wi-Fi service.

Moreover, the CDA’s technical team will help the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) in setting up the system.

The CDA chairman directed that an operational and marketing model will be developed to make this system self-sustainable, and the revenue generated from it will be utilised for the maintenance and upgradation of the “Free Wi-Fi City” programme.

The operation and maintenance of this system will be the responsibility of NTC. “Islamabad will soon be turned into a 'Free Wi-Fi City,' providing modern digital facilities to its citizens,” he announced.

The CDA chairman noted that this initiative is part of the CDA’s broader vision to transform Islamabad into a fully connected smart city.
